The problem with learning English

I moved to Singapore over seven years ago. My English was functional — good enough for meetings, good enough for code reviews — but I always felt like something was missing. Textbooks taught me grammar rules. Apps taught me vocabulary lists. But nobody taught me how people actually talk.

Then I noticed something. Every time I listened to an English song, I’d pick up a phrase naturally. Not because I was studying — but because the melody made it stick. “Break the ice.” “Piece of cake.” “Hit the road.” These phrases just landed differently when they came with a beat.

The idea

What if there was an app that took that natural experience and made it intentional? An app that shows you real song lyrics, highlights the phrases worth learning, and helps you remember them?

That’s Songlyo.

How it works

You pick a song you like. The lyrics scroll in real-time as the music plays. Phrases, idioms, and vocabulary are highlighted — tap any of them to see the meaning, example sentences, and translations. Then those phrases go into a smart flashcard system with spaced repetition, so you actually remember them weeks later.

It’s not a language course. It’s not a classroom. It’s just music — with a learning layer on top.

What makes it different

Most language apps treat learning like homework. Duolingo gamifies it. Anki makes it efficient. But Songlyo makes it something you’d actually want to do — because you’re listening to music you already enjoy.
